Black & Denim

Another outfit post, another day when I haven't brushed my hair. Awesome.

This denim shirt will be perfect as a light-weight kind of jacket over pretty summer dresses if and when the weather warms up - and that's a big if. Plus if the last couple of years are anything to by, we probably won't even get a proper summer at all.

But anyway, back to the shirt. It has pretty embroidery on the shoulders which obviously made me instantly want it, given my latest obsession with shoulder details!

Things for my imaginary house

The problem with winter is that it's so hard to get out of bed in the morning, because you know that while you're still snuggled under the covers, that is the warmest you are going to be all day. And that is a depressing thought first thing on a Monday morning. All you want to do on these days is wear your absolute comfiest clothes, and those aren't usually the cutest outfits.

Anyway, one of my favourite things to do is look at homeware, which I can't buy because I don't yet have my own house. And that makes me sad because there's no point in me buying things like that right now. Oh well, one day. Here's a few things I've found lately anyway, for my 'one day' house.

This octopus shower curtain from Fab.com. I don't know why I like this because it's kind of creepy looking, but I love it. It's quirky.

These dinosaur cushions from H&M. I think they're probably meant for a child, but I really love dinosaurs, they are cool.

I love this adorable wall print. I love a good cuppa.

Cute mugs! I have a thing for mugs, you can never have too many!

When I do one day leave home, I definitely want to get a globe. This John Lewis one is really pretty.

Of course, by the time I am in a position where purchasing things like these is actually not a ridiculous thing for me to do, I bet none of the above items will be available anymore. Never mind, such is life.

25 facts, 11-20

Here we go again...

11. The only pets I have ever had were two rats when I was about 11 or 12. The were called Tyke and Bounty, and they were adorable, even though they chewed everything in sight. Bounty always used to breathe quite fast and one day I got home from school to find that she'd died, I'm guessing of some kind of respiratory problem. Tyke developed a tumour some time after that and we took her to the vets to get it removed. She used to chew through her stitches though (gross). Anyway, soon after that we moved back to Saudi so gave her to my cousin to look after, and they had to have her put down because her tumour grew back. We never got another pet, although my parents now have a cat at their house in Saudi which is annoying because they never let me get one. Typical.

12. When I was about 3 or 4, we went to Kenya on Safari. I don't remember much about it, but at one point we were having a little picnic lunch, and a baboon wandered over and stole my lunch. This is no word of a lie. It was all very upsetting (I hate to miss a meal). Apparently it targeted my particular lunch because I was the smallest.

13. I am deathly afraid of geese. They are Satan's creatures. I've had my lunch stolen by a goose also, actually. Well, I threw my hotdog at it because it was chasing me. It was very traumatic though, I don't want to talk about it, haha.

14. I used to go to ballet lessons when I was younger, and apparently I was terrible (cheers for the support Dad haha). We had a show and I actually had a solo, but I was the old lady who swallowed a fly or something (I don't remember how the dance went) so I didn't get to wear anything pretty. I think my parents had to suffer through a few dance shows before I decided it wasn't for me.

15. I have trouble telling the time on watches with no numbers, unless it's 12, 3, 6 or 9 'o' clock. Speaking of watches, I have the worst luck with them, I manage to inexplicably break them. We went on a Caribbean cruise once and my dad bought me a really nice watch while we were on the ship and I think I'd only had it a couple of months when the the fastening clip broke or something. I think I've managed to break two watches bought for me by my dad actually. I hope he doesn't think it's anything personal!

16. I am of the opinion that I have the best taste in music ever. Obnoxiously so. If people don't like songs that I like...well, they're wrong.

17. I'm absolutely convinced that I will win the lottery one day. I figure that someone has to win every week, and it might as well be me. It's definitely going to happen. You'll see.

18. We went on a family holiday to the Maldives when I was younger and we stayed in a little cabin kind of thing over the water, so we could climb down this little ladder and we were straight in the sea. I remember this holiday for two reasons: 1 - that I dropped the little people from my Polly Pocket into the water and lost them forever, and 2 - my brother pretended he got attacked by a barracuda. What a comedian.

19. Whenever I go to a place that has an Aquarium, I have to go. I love them.

20. As I discovered last year, I am not that good with roller coasters. I'll go on them, but will most likely have my eyes shut the whole way round. Oh, and Oblivion is horrible, it literally made me feel like I was going to turn inside out.

See you next time, if I can think of 5 more things about me!

Song of the Day: Closer by Tegan and Sara

Currently reading: About three books honestly. I kind of stopped reading You Had Me At Hello for a while because it wasn't moving as fast as I wanted it to, and I started reading Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince instead. Now I'm also reading Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater on my Kindle, which I'm already racing through, and guess what, it's a trilogy! It's pretty good so far although pretty similar to Twilight I guess, just with no vampires (but extra werewolves). At least the protagonist isn't anywhere near as pathetic as Bella. That's my next two books sorted anyway!

Shoulder Detail

The sun is out, which is lovely but it tricks me into thinking it's really warm outside. I'm having to remind myself that it's still only February. Ah well, I bet we'll have an unseasonably warm April again and then the whole summer will be a complete washout, which is what we've had the last couple of years. I need to go on holiday.

I'm a sucker for anything with a bit of shoulder detail at the moment. It adds a bit of fancy to plainer tops, which I like. I've also been plaiting my hair a lot lately, which I like, although my boss at work has started calling me Dorothy (or Dotty), and someone else has also inexplicably started calling me Pocahontas (she didn't wear plaits did she?).

Patterns and Pastels

So it snowed again, which is annoying, but at least it came at a time when I didn't particularly have to go anywhere. Just in time for my days off in fact. So good timing, weather. I've started doing that 50 facts about me thing doing the rounds on my other blog, here. I didn't know whether to do it here as well but thought it would be silly to have it in two places when I can just link to it instead. Anyway, I wore clothes today! Look!

I think I need a haircut. My layers have pretty much all grown out now. I don't know though, I kind of like it looking all unruly. I haven't been to the hairdressers since the summer either so I really probably should go!

Anyway, this skirt is another one I have trouble styling, but I think maybe I'm just not adventurous enough. I like how my outfit turned out anyway.

25 facts about me, 1-10

So this '50 random facts about yourself' thing has been doing the rounds on loads of blogs lately and I figured I may as well join in. I'm only going to do 25 though, because 50 just sounds like a ridiculous effort. The facts might not even be that random, just things you might not know about me. They won't even be all that interesting. Bet you can't wait to read this now!

  1. The first gig (well, concert) I ever went to was Bryan Adams with my parents and brother at the NEC in Birmingham. He was awesome. Since then I've only seen Boy Kill Boy, and then I saw Feeder when they came to my University's May Ball. So yeah, I'm not really a big gig attender. I do love music though.
  2. I lived in Saudi Arabia from the ages 2-10 and then 13-16, so 11 years overall because my parents got teaching jobs out there. It was a really great place to grow up which sounds weird to everyone unless they grew up there too. My parents still live there now (which gives me free reign of our UK house except when they're back for holidays). So I guess I have the unique experience of still living at home but not technically living with my parents.
  3. I hate tomato ketchup with the burning passion of a thousand fiery suns. As a waitress, I come into contact with the nasty stuff on an almost daily basis so I'm used to it, but I still find it revolting. Clearing plates with ketchup smeared all over them is my least favourite thing about my job.
  4. I'm a sucker for creature-feature type films. Jaws is my favourite movie, but I also love things like Anaconda and Lake Placid. Last night I watched Piranha, the one with Kelly Brook in it, and it was amazing - total rubbish obviously, but amazing. I don't know why I'm drawn to these types of films, I think maybe I just like that they don't take themselves too seriously.
  5. I am the jumpiest person ever. This is something that the boys at work have been enjoying immensely ever since they realised, by jumping out at me from behind fridges when I walk past, or sneaking up behind me and just hovering there until I turn around, making me jump out of my skin. I'm ridiculous in scary films.
  6. I passed my theory test second time, and my driving test third time. I'm ok with this because I beat my brother who passed fourth time.
  7. I always get nervous before making a big purchase for myself, even though I know I have enough money for it. I was like this before buying my GHDs a few years ago, and last year with my iPhone. I kept going online and adding it to my basket and then chickening out. I don't know why, but buying expensive things like that makes me feel guilty even if I really want it, but I won't think twice about spending money on clothes.
  8. I have never broken any bones (touch wood!) and have only been to hospital once, when I was little because I got quite dehydrated and had to go on a drip.
  9. I don't think I will ever grow tired of reading/watching Harry Potter. It's such a good story and is now just synonymous with my generation. I've been to the Harry Potter Studio tour which was fantastic, and I really want to go to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios in Orlando. One day...
  10. I was in Sydney over Christmas and New Year when I was 19 and I got to do the Sydney Harbour Bridge climb and see the fireworks on New Years Eve, both of which were incredible experiences. If you ever get a chance to go, I would definitely take it! I'd love to go back.
I think I'll leave it there for today. Thinking of facts about yourself is really hard, you guys.

Leopard Print

I've had this skirt for a while now but haven't really worn it properly because I had absolutely no idea how to style it. I have this issue with skater skirts - I love them, but don't really know if they suit me.

All the tops I have that I could tuck into the skirt just didn't look right, and what I eventually came up with (layering, my go to!) looks a little on the bulky side. Oh well. I quite like the colour clash anyway, makes it a little more interesting.

Tartan

I had to check back through the last month of my blog to double check I hadn't already posted this outfit because honestly, I wear it all the time. Not even really a variation of it either, just this exactly. Maybe a cardigan thrown on top. Could have done with one here actually, it is still winter after all!

I got this shirt just before Christmas as a cheeky present to myself. It's perfect for winter, nice and thick, plus it would look nice with  plain jumper over the top (I don't have one that goes with the tartan colours unfortunately).

Early bird

I'm finding it really difficult to get back into the swing of blogging regularly after Christmas. Work has been busy - much busier than I expected at this time of year - and I spend most of my free time feeling pretty exhausted. I need to get back into a routine, but then that's pretty much the story of my life, constantly looking for a consistent routine!

This morning I had to go into town for a 9.45am sight test and contact lens check up. I always like to get appointments like this out of the way as early as possible because then it leaves me the rest of day to do what I want with. I've been informed that I have become slightly more short-sighted (booo) but that I get a free pair of glasses as part of my easy-care package (yay!). I'm planning on heading back next week when I have a bit more time to pick out some frames.

But anyway, while I was in town I could pick up a few bits that I needed (and also a dress from Primark - it's well worth going first thing in the morning before the masses have descended and made it a total mess!) and I did my food shopping for the week. All that and I made it home before midday. This afternoon I made double chocolate chip cookies for the first time ever and they are seriously yummy.

My point here is that getting up earlier, even on days where you don't have to, will probably make your day much more productive and thus make you feel less crappy. So that's my helpful hint for the day. Not that you asked for one.

Oh yeah and apparently we're supposed to get more snow this week? There was a little bit on the ground this morning but if we get a repeat of last months I will actually kill someone. Well, not really, but I'll be very unhappy.

Currently reading: You Had Me At Hello by Mhairi McFarlane. So far it's your typical romance type book but enjoyable nonetheless. I think next I should try and read something more taxing. It's so much effort though!
